Si usted es argentino y puede ahorrar, seguramente lo hará en dólares. Imagine ahora que el Gobierno le dice que depreciará el peso a razón de 2% por mes. Y que si tiene pesos que le sobran le pagará entre 4% y 5% de interés cada 30 días. Su asesor financiero le recomendará entonces una operación muy simple: que cambie sus dólares por pesos, compre con esos pesos bonos o póngalos a plazo fijo y, terminado el mes, vuelva a comprar dólares. La diferencia entre la depreciación del peso que le prometió el Estado y la tasa de interés que recibió determinará la cantidad de dólares que habrá ganado al final del ciclo. Parece un trabalenguas, pero es una operación con nombre y apellido: en la calle se la conoce como “bicicleta financiera”; los operadores prefieren llamarla carry trade. La bicicleta financiera fue un clásico de la dictadura argentina de los setenta, revivió en 2016 con Mauricio Macri y ha vuelto ahora con el ultraderechista Javier Milei. Los argentinos que se subieron a la bicicleta han ganado en 10 meses hasta 50% en dólares, otro milagro del descalabro macroeconómico argentino.
Para que ruede la bicicleta tienen que darse algunas condiciones al menos contradictorias: una confluencia de tasas altas en moneda local, evidencia de su debilidad, contra una apreciación de esa moneda contra el dólar, lo cual supone una gran fortaleza. Como Argentina suele ser una excepción a las reglas de la macroeconomía, los especuladores suelen hacerse allí un festín de ganancias de alto riesgo. Hoy están dadas todas las condiciones. Con el objetivo de controlar la inflación, el Gobierno de Milei fijó la depreciación del peso en un 2% mensual, dos puntos menos que el promedio de inflación. Al mismo tiempo, como necesita limpiar de un exceso de pesos el mercado, ofrece tasas por encima de la inflación, de hasta 5%. Hay además cepo cambiario, es decir, que la compra y venta de divisas está controlada por el Estado, impidiendo la libre flotación. El escenario se completa con un blanqueo de capitales que introdujo en el mercado 12.000 millones de dólares que fueron a parar a los bancos y fortalecieron las reservas internacionales.
La bicicleta financiera es tentadora, pero es también extremadamente peligrosa. Basta que haya una devaluación para que el diferencial entre la inversión inicial en pesos y la recompra de dólares se esfume. Pasó en 2018, cuando los inversores que habían adquirido bonos en pesos perdieron la confianza en el gobierno de Mauricio Macri y huyeron en estampida. El Banco Central llegó a vender en un solo día casi 1.500 millones de dólares de sus reservas para contener el valor de la moneda, pero todo fue insuficiente. En abril, cuando inició la crisis, un dólar se compraba por 20 pesos; dos meses después el tipo de cambio ya había superado los 30 pesos. Lo que tienen claro los inversores es que las condiciones que permiten subirse a la bicicleta no pueden durar para siempre porque son insostenibles para el funcionamiento de la economía.
¿Está el modelo de Milei, basado en un dólar atrasado y tasas altas, agotándose? “La pregunta está, pero por el momento solo entre las consultoras”, dice un operador que prefiere no dar su nombre. “El punto es hasta dónde podrá el Gobierno sostener la devaluación mensual del 2%, con una inflación que ronda el 4%, sin que el atraso cambiario se haga insostenible. Y si este proceso de estabilización va a encontrar una manera de no devaluar para levantar el cepo, lo que supone eliminar la brecha que existe entre las cotizaciones del dólar fijado por el Banco Central y los financieros”, que flotan sin la intervención del Gobierno, explica.
¿Si crecen las dudas, por qué las operaciones continúan? Porque ya llevan 10 meses con ganancias estratosféricas y lo que cuenta es el balance al final del proceso. ¿Quiénes son entonces lo que pueden perder más? Los que entraron tarde al sistema, tal como sucede con aquellos que quedan en la parte baja de las estafas piramidales tipo sistema Ponzi. “Hay una frase entre los inversores que dice ‘flujo mata fundamento”, explica la fuente. “Podemos decir que Argentina está cara en dólares por el atraso cambiario, pero si el Gobierno sigue interviniendo con reservas para mantener a raya la cotización de los financieros y entra además la plata del blanqueo nos podemos atrasar aún más. El juego de la bicicleta es agarrar ese timing. Si quedas pegado último con deuda en pesos y hay una devaluación, vas a tener una pérdida grande”, explica. Por ahora, la bicicleta argentina sigue rodando.
